Walter H. "Sonny" Durst, age 89, passed away Monday morning August 25, 2014. He was born April 25, 1925 to parents, Walter A. Durst and Erna (Immel) Durst in Fredericksburg, Texas. He was a faithful member of Calvary Lighthouse Assembly of God in Mason, Texas.

On September 30, 1943 Walter married Myrtle Mae Crouch in Brady, Texas. They lived on the Blockhouse Ranch for 20 years from 1948-1968. Walter was foreman of the ranch for most of the 20 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. After moving to town, he worked for the City of Mason and Mason County as well as running a chainsaw business. He enjoyed working on small motors, lawnmowers and could "fix" just about anything.

We will miss Sonny's unique sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter A. and Erna Durst; wife Myrtle (Crouch) Durst; daughter Brenda (Durst) Chapman; son, Jimmy Durst; sisters Deedie Durst, Ruth (Durst) Brashier. He is survived by son, Tommy Neal Durst and wife June of Mason; daughter, Rhonda Ann McFarland and husband Freddie of Leander; son-in-law Bill Chapman of Mason; 3 grandchildren, Matt Chapman and wife Jill of Corpus Christi; Tracie (Chapman) Morris and husband Mike of Mason; Alexis (McFarland) Dunn and husband Cody of Leander and 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Bertie Dannheim and husband Larry of San Antonio; Helen Thompson of San Antonio; Virginia Evans of Kerrville; and Evelyn Thompson of Corpus Christi. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m. in the Mason Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Gooch Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Matt Chapman, Sammy Crouch, Cody Dunn, Doug Evans, Steve Evans and Bert Thompson. Honorary pallbearers are Jeff Brashier, Doug Crouch, Frankie Crouch, Greg Dannheim, Mile Dannheim, Harold Gentry, Jeffrey Gentry, Mitchell Gentry and James Thompson.
