Allen Ray "Tommy" Chew

Allen Ray "Tommy" Chew, of Mason, passed away on Thursday, September 6, at the age of 87. Mr. Chew is survived by his wife Beth Chew of Mason, a son Ron Chew and wife Suzann, of Kerrville a daughter Jeanne Chew of Von Ormy and two grandchildren Jaime Chew of Brooklyn, New York and Nicholas Chew of Kerrville. He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers Lola Mae Underwood, Ossie Chew, Cecil Chew, Alma Wainscott, Woodrow Chew, Naomi Brown, Margie Anderson, Norma Chew and Percy Chew.

"Tommy" was born in Llano county on October 9, 1924 to Elisha Leon Chew and Flora Bell Denis Chew. He lived most of his life in Mason. During World War II he served as an M.P. in the Army Air Corps. He had wanted to be a mechanic, but since he was a Golden Glove bantam weight boxing champion, the military had other plans for him. On June 1, 1947 he married Beth Evans in Mason.

He was a hard working man who loved the outdoors. For 20 years he served as Pct 1 County Commisioner. With the help of his wife he owned and operated the Odeon Theater and Mason Auto Supply. He enjoyed breaking horses, going to rodeos, hunting with his coon dogs and fishing. He also raced hot rods on dirt tracks around the area. He had an ear for music and had his own country and western band "Tommy Chew and The Orange Blossom Special".

Funeral services for Tommy Chew will be held on Sunday, September 9, at 3:00 p.m. in the Mason Funeral Home chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in the Gooch Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home.
