Melvin James "MJ" Metzger, age, 80 of Mason, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026.

Melvin was born on August 4, 1945, to Clarence Rueban Metzger and Lona Irene Tuckness Metzger. He was born and raised in Mason and graduated from Mason High School.

After graduation MJ relocated to Austin, Tx where he was employed by IBM Corporation until his retirement after 25 years. He was community oriented, creating and serving on the Homeowners Association establishing procedures and policies for the subdivision and homeowners. An ardent supporter of youth organizations he was actively involved in Little League baseball, Williamson County Livestock Association, 4-H and FFA clubs. MJ served on the Leander ISD Board of Directors as a member, VP and President. He was instrumental in growing the district from an at-risk to a top-ranked district in the state and building multiple new schools across the district. MJ was a member of the Texas National Guard, the Sheriff's Association of Texas and the First United Methodist Church. In 1993 he returned to Mason and served as Mason County Sheriff.

MJ enjoyed a life well lived and will forever be in our hearts. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ranching sports, gardening and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Don Metzger and sister Lola Faye Barr.

He is survived by his wife Ella, son Scott and 4 grandkids Elayna Grace, Abby Elizabeth, Megan Ella and Owen Clarence Metzger.

Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, June 21, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held Monday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at the Gooch Cemetery.
