Obituary

Mary Evelyn Engdahl was born December 30, 1933 in Rochelle, Texas to William Theodore Engdahl and Pattie Mae Cole Engdahl. She attended school in Rochelle and briefly attended business school in Abilene, Texas before marrying Jamie Voigt Hemphill December 21, 1952.

Jamie and Mary lived in Abilene while Jamie completed degrees in Bible and Mathematics at Abilene Christian College. They moved to Mason, Texas in 1954, where Jamie taught math at Mason Elementary School and was a coach. In 1959 they moved to Massena, New York, where they were involved in mission work.   Mary gave birth to Steven Blane Hemphill July 27, 1957, and Kendal Reid Hemphill March 13, 1961. They returned to Mason in 1961, and Jamie resumed his teaching and counseling career.

Mary was a homemaker, choosing to devote her time to raising her two sons. She later worked as a bookkeeper for the Mason Auction Company, and helped Jamie with his income tax business, which he began in 1965. When Jamie retired from Mason ISD in 1979, Mary assisted him in his insurance business.

Mary and Jamie were faithful members of the Church of Christ, and were deeply involved in their church, community, family, and benevolence work. Mary was an excellent cook, an accomplished 42 player, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. If you wanted to know anything about her family, you could ask her and she'd tell you. And if you didn't ask her, she'd tell you anyway.

Mary was friendly, outgoing, loving, and giving to everyone she knew. She dedicated her life to serving others, and sharing her faith in God. She spent her time helping others, near and far, in any way she could, and gave of herself at every opportunity. Her life was spent in service to her church and her family, and her legacy of love and sacrifice lives on in those who knew her.

Mary went home February 11, 2021, following her parents, three brothers, one sister, and her beloved husband. She left behind her sons Steven and wife Mary Lynn, Kendal and wife Jocelynn, her grandsons Spencer Hemphill, Blake Hemphill and wife Kayli, Jay Hemphill and wife Maryn, Courtland Hemphill, Paden Hemphill and wife Rachel, Leret Hemphill and wife Emily, and her great grandchildren, Witten Blake Hemphill, Addie Lou Hemphill, and Elon Jamie Hemphill.

Heaven is enriched, and we are diminished.
