Maria Victoria "Vickie" Montez surrendered to her yearlong battle with cancer at the age of 66. Vickie passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, February 4, 2022 with her loving husband and two nieces, Ana Velez and Lisa Ramirez by her side.

Vickie was born in Mason, TX on November 12, 1955, to Eleno and Rita Castillo.  She was a lifetime resident of Mason, she worked at Mason County News for over 20 years, and after leaving the news office, she went on to work at Mason County Appraisal district for several years.  Vickie finished her career working for The City of Mason where she retired after 12 years. Vickie was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband and true love Arturo Nelms of Mason, one son, Gerardo Marquez and wife Debbie from Rockwall, TX, 3 sisters, Maria Elena Velez (Mason), Olga Mesa (Mason), and Juanita Zavala (Fredericksburg), along with 6 grandchildren whom she was VERY proud of and loved with all her heart.  Vickie also left behind several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who she greatly loved, and they too greatly loved her. Vickie was preceded in death by her parents, Eleno and Rita Castillo, her infant daughter, Sondra Montez, one sister, Valentina Dominguez and one brother, Victor Castillo.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 8 at Mason Funeral Home from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and will be followed by the funeral service. Interment will follow at Gooch Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that we respect Vickie's wishes and donate to the Mason County Cancer Society.
