Lawrence Spell, Jr., of Mason, passed away on Friday, October 21, at the age of 69. Mr. Spell is survived by two sons Lawrence Spell III of Jasper and Jesse Spell and wife Brittany of Lumberton and a sister Velma Barras and husband Gene of Nederland. He was preceded in death by a sister Laura Spell. Visitation with the family was Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held graveside at the Wagram Cemetery on Wednesday, October 26, at 11:00 a.m. with military honors provided by the Mason VFW/American Legion Post. Pastor Ryan Buck will lead the service.
Lawrence was born in Port Arthur, Texas on May 17, 1947 to Lawrence Spell, Sr. and Olive Stansbury Spell. He graduated from Nederland High School and served in the Navy for 3 years and 8 months. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After serving in the military, Lawrence returned to Texas and for over 30 years worked in the petrochemical industry in Orange for Shell and Chevron.
About 30 years ago Lawrence bought property near Fredonia and after retiring moved there 14 years ago. Lawrence was an active member of the local VFW and the Mason Lions Club. He loved the outdoors and living in the country. He also loved his two Blue Lacy dogs.
