Laverne Lee, of Mason, passed away on Monday, February 13, at the age of 83. Laverne is survived by her husband Jack Lee of Mason and Son Robin Lee of Mason along with 2 grandchildren Julia Lee of San Francisco, California and Andrew Lee of Menlo Park, California. She was preceded in death by a son John Wallace Lee in 1981.
Laverne was born on March 2, 1928 in Mason to Roy Capps and Ella Hasse Capps. She attended Mason schools and was a graduate of TCU. Laverne was very active in the Mason community. She was the first president of Riata Service Organization and through Riata helped with funding for the Mason Hospital and the development of Heritage Park. Laverne developed the "Country Lanes" wildflower trails for the Mason County Chamber of Commerce and the walking tour of Mason along with a brochure that included images she had sketched of the various sights in Mason. She was an accomplished artist whose work is prized by many. Laverne was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason. She was involved in ranching and owned and operated the Hasse House bed and breakfast at Art. Laverne was the first board member of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg that was not a resident of Gillespie County.
Funeral services for Laverne Lee will be held on Thursday, February 16, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mason. Interment will follow in the Gooch Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home.
Memorials in her honor may be made to Mason Habitat for Humanity, Steady Steps at FUMC or to First United Methodist Church of Mason.
