Larry Kahan joined his Lord and Savior on the morning of May 30, 2024, as he held the hand of his son.

Born in Philadelphia to Harry and Leah Kahan, Larry spent his formative years in Baltimore.  While his younger brother played piano and hobnobbed, Larry was busy playing whatever sport he could-though he would also fondly recall several summer bible school sessions conducted by the nuns down the street.  After playing football at West Texas State University in Canyon, he pursued his Master's in Education at Southern Illinois.  It was then off to the El Paso area, where he eventually met Marilyn Leifeste of Art, Texas.  After marrying, they would ultimately make their way to the Austin area.  Larry taught and coached at several schools in the area, spending the most time at Dobie Middle School in Austin, but would find the greatest joy in coaching various little league baseball and basketball teams for his son, Ryne.

Larry retired when the family moved to Mason in 1998 and attempted to perfect his golf game, but he just could not stay out of the classroom.  Over the next quarter-century, he went from consistently substituting for Mason ISD to becoming a full-time staff member, dedicating his last years to helping high school students pass various state tests.  He ws also dedicated to family, supporting Marilyn through her long-term battle with cancer and his son in his various endeavors.  When Larry was not burnishing his reputation as perhaps the only person around crazy enough to be out running the streets of Mason on a hot July afternoon, he enjoyed spending his time supporting the Punchers and Cowgirls.  To the end, Mason athletics was appointment viewing and listening.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his parents and his brother, Melvyn.  He is survived by his son, Ryne Kahan of Mason, his sisters-in-law, Lyndith Kuhne of Mason, Goldie Lease of Garland and Janet James of Venus, and the countless number of students and fellow educators whose lives he touched.

Thanks to the dedicated nurses and staff at Methodist Hill Country Hospice, especially Carla and Greg, and Windcrest/Enchanted Rock Nursing and Rehabilitation, especially Mark, Jessica, and Theresa, for their compassion and care.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday, June 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home.   The funeral service will be Sunday, June 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mason with Rev. Peter Aguilar leading the service.  Interment will follow in the Gooch Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Larry's name to the MISD Education Foundation or the charity of your choice.
