Obituary

Juan Rojas Vasquez, of Mason, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, at the age of 81. Mr. Vasquez is survived by his wife Maria Elena Vasquez, of Mason, 4 daughters Dora Vasquez and husband Marco Berreles of Mason, Victoria Duarte and husband Ray Duarte Sr. of Mason, Maria Martinez and husband David Martinez of Mason, Gloria Gomez and husband Jose Gomez of Rochelle along with 2 sisters Petra Morales of Iraan and Fidencia Barrientos of Nova, Coah., Mexico, 14 grandchildren and spouses: Maria, Christy, Mandy and Mitchell King, Sonia Martinez and Ernest Mora of Mason, Sgt. A.J. Martinez and wife Alexa of El Paso, Ray Duarte Jr. and wife Ashley of Mason, Bryan Duarte and Amelia Herring, Brynda and Matt Harper of Tolar, Tx, Johnny and Ludi Castillo of Round Rock, Michael and Rachel Martinez of Jupiter Florida, Jose Luis and Lee Gomez and Jessica Gomez of Rochelle, 21 great-grandchildren an "adopted daughter" Marcelina Rivera and husband Martin of Mason and a very special nephew Felix Cedillo and wife Mary of Mason. Juan was preceded in death by a daughter Eva Vasquez Lopez, a great-grandson Austin Garrett, 7 brothers and 5 sisters.

Juan came to the United States as a young man and moved to Mason where he worked on area ranches. On April 23, 1953 He married Maria Elena De La Cerda. They made their home in Mason and raised their family here. Juan loved ranch work and breaking horses.

Visitation with the family was Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home. The Rosary was recited at 7 with Jane Vargas leading the service. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, February 5, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason. Fr. Melvin Dornak led the service. Interment followed in the Crosby Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Johnny Castillo, Ray Duarte Jr., Bryan Duarte, Jose Luis Gomez, Michael Martinez, Matt Harper, A. J. Martinez, Felix Cedillo and Octavio Cedillo. Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews and close friends too numerous to mention all of them.
