John Rector Nicholson, Jr. (JR, Nick, J Rector, or Sonny) died peacefully late on the night of October 6, 2017 surrounded by the people and pets who loved him. It was the latest he'd ever stayed up.

Born January 1, 1929 to Mary Elizabeth (White) Nicholson and Dr. John Rector Nicholson, Sr. was the first baby born in Bexar County that year.

A graduate of The University of Texas and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity; he did a short stint as a naval officer at the tail end of the Korean war (JR said he never really did anything but show up). He eschewed all formal organizations preferring instead to spend his time amongst animals and nature.

JR spent many a happy summer working alongside his uncle John Welburn (Dub) White on Dub's ranch. It was then that he developed his lifelong love of the country and open spaces.

After a career as a self-employed Oil & Gas Lease Broker, he retired to the ranch in (roughly) 1993 where he lived peacefully with his many, many, many animals.

JR was the grandson of John Welburn White, Sr. and Cora J. (Bridges) White. The White Ranch was established in 1888 and has been in the family ever since.

JR is survived by his only child, Elizabeth Nicholson King; his favorite son-in-law, Creston Alexander King III; his grandson, Creston Alexander King IV (Cuatro); and his granddaughter, Mignon Elizabeth King (Libby).

Devoted friends, employees, caregivers and pets brought much love and laughter to JR's life and include, Brian Wright, Petra Saucedo, Clifford Payne, Yessica Vaquera, Patricia Medellin-Molina, Jessie Coleman, Barbara Tatsch, Betty Simon, Jennifer Tatsch, Monte Munsell, Hatch Smith, Lorenzo Arroyo, Buddy the Ranch Dog, Zeus, Georgia, Reina, Zarco, Sam, Cisco, Cricket, Filemon, Peanut and Gabe.

A private service and reception will be held at a later date.
