John Scott Brown was born October 14, 1950, in Coronado, California to John Franklin Brown and Audrey Adams Brown. He passed away July 16 in Baylor Scott and White in Round Rock, Texas after a short illness. He graduated from Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas in 1970. He attended Southwest Texas State in San Marcos for several years. In 1973, he moved to Houston and worked for A&P until they closed all the stores in Texas. He married the love of his life Nancy Hanz Brown on October 19, 1974.

He subsequently went to work for Halliburton Services and served in several different capacities including oilfield cementer, safety trainer, and lab analyst. He suffered severe injuries in May 1983 in an oilfield accident. He subsequently went back to work in the fall of 1983 in a sales capacity until April of 1985 when he left Halliburton.

John and Nancy built a house on 6 acres in Richmond and moved in March 1986 and soon purchased 2 horses. John started taking western pleasure riding lessons and started showing horses. At the age of 40 (1990), he decided to venture into English pleasure riding with the assistance of his temperamental mare Bubbling Brown Sugar (BS for short). Her goal was to see if she could dismount him at least once a week or so. He started showing her in English pleasure as well. John and Nancy traveled to many horse shows over the next 10 years.

John was an avid hunting fan his entire life. He had leases in Luling, Point Comfort and finally Victoria. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing which he was able to do on many vacations that he and Nancy took to various places such as Playa del Carmen, Grand Cayman, St Thomas, St John, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallerta, Cozumel, Mazatlan, and Ixtapa. They also enjoyed several trips in the US such as to the state parks in Arkansas, Big Bend, Carlsbad Caverns and other parts of New Mexico.

John had a deep love for animals especially dogs and cats. During his married life to Nancy, they almost continually had a dachshund. They also had 2 Weimaraners and 2 Wirehaired Pointers during their marriage. In addition, there were a myriad of cats, some procured and some who adopted them.

In 2006, John and Nancy purchased their retirement home and 60 acres in Voca. They permanently moved in March 2011 and were initiated into the goat business. They became members of St Paul Lutheran Church and quickly became involved by being on the Property Committee. John also particularly enjoyed the monthly noisy bucket offering that the children would collect. He always had his bank bag of change ready to add at least some change to as many of the children's buckets as he could. John loved both Voca and Mason and was an avid listener to the Friday night Mason Puncher football games.

John is survived by his wife, Nancy. He is also survived by sister-in-law Myrtle Hassell of Hempstead, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Lee Linscombe of Universal City, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Roger and Jean Hanz of Kingsport, TN. He is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews and 4 great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one aunt, Helen Weidner of Spring Branch and numerous cousins.
John is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Susan Brown.

There will be a visitation at Mason Funeral Home on Friday, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at St Paul Lutheran Church at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22. Interment will follow at Voca Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Voca VFD, Mason VFD, the church or to the charity of your choice.

The family also wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, and other staff at both Baylor Scott and White Marble Falls and Baylor Scott and White Round Rock for making his last days as comfortable as possible.
