Donnel Keith Pullum of Streeter, Texas, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2024, at the age of 67. Known simply as Don to those who loved him, he was a visionary in the Texas wine industry and a beloved figure in the Mason, Texas, community. His legacy of passion, craftsmanship, and advocacy for the Texas Hill Country will live on in the wines he helped create and the people he inspired.

Don was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas to Rita and James Otis Pullum Sr. He is survived by his brother (James Otis Pullum, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca Pullum), sister (Lisa Pullum Powell and her husband William H. Powell III), nieces (Ashlee Powell and Rachel Pullum), and nephews (William H. Powell IV and Joshua Pullum) and great nephews (William Dane Tower and Liam James Powell). Don was a proud Harvard graduate and successful in the capital investment banking industry prior to his decision to relocate to Mason County to pursue his dream of owning a vineyard.

As the winemaker of Sandstone Cellars in Mason, Don crafted wines that celebrated the unique terroir of the Texas Hill Country, particularly the Hickory Sands District AVA—a wine-growing subregion that he championed throughout his career. Don played a pivotal role in promoting the Hickory Sands District, advocating for its recognition as an AVA (American Viticultural Area) due to its unique soil composition and climate.

Don's contributions to the wine community extended far beyond his own winery. He was a mentor to many young winemakers, always willing to share his knowledge and encourage others in the craft. He was a regular speaker at wine symposiums, where his enthusiasm for the future of Texas wine was evident.

In honor of Don's life and legacy, donations may be made to organizations that support sustainable agriculture and viticulture in Texas, causes that were close to his heart.
