Charlene was born in Mason on November 11, 1939 to Arch Starks and Pearl Kidd Starks. Her parents were ranchers and she grew up riding horses and doing ranch work. The first word she said was not "mama" or "dada" but was the name of her mother's horse! Charlene never lost her strong work ethic or her love of the outdoors.
In 1958 she graduated from Mason High School. In High School she was a cheerleader. She married her high school sweetheart, the star of the football team, Melvin Thomas. They were together for 56 years until his death in March of this year.
Charlene and Melvin eventually settled in Fort Stockton where Charlene worked for the Fort Stockton School District as a financial secretary for 36 years. She was active in the Fort Stockton Volunteer Fire Department Auxilliary, served as a Mentor at Fort Stockton High School and was an active member of the Methodist Church in Fort Stockton where she taught Sunday School for many years.
After she and Melvin retired, they moved to Brady so they could be closer to their Mason County roots. Charlene continued to stay active as long as her health allowed. She served as Secretary for the Cutting Horse Association and she loved being outdoors hunting or riding horses. She was a strong minded individual and maintained her strong work ethic. Charlene had a deep love for animals, especially her 3 dachshunds.
Memorials in her honor may be made to the Alzheimer Association.
