Obituary

C.H. Smith, of Mason, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, at the age of 82. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Carolyn Smith of Mason, 2 sons Terry Smith of Mason, Ted Smith of Mason and special friend Jane Miller of Doss, three grandchildren Heather Lock and husband Brandon of San Angelo, Koby Smith of Kerrville and Brigett Mikulik and husband Garrett of San Angelo and one great granddaughter Addison Lock of San Angelo. He is also survived by a nephew Todd George and wife Dana of Austin and a niece Kathryn Hallberg and husband Tom of Austin. C.H. was preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bogusch and Mr. and Mrs. Wes Smith, his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Smith of London and a sister Patsy Smith George.

C.H. was born in Mason County on March 15, 1928 to Cecil Smith and Marie Bogusch Smith. He attended school in Mason and was a 1945 graduate of Mason High School where he played football. He attended John Tarleton College in Stephenville and in 1948 married Carolyn Eckert. They were together for 63 years!

C.H. was involved in ranching all of his life. He also worked as secretary for the Mason Chamber of Commerce during the drought of the 1950's so that he could continue to pay his ranch workers. He also served as a director of Mason National Bank for 35 years. C.H. also devoted his time to the community. He spent countless hours working with Operation Orphans for over 50 years and he was very involved in the building of the rodeo arena at the park. In his spare time he loved to hunt and fish. He fished in Canada and Alaska and hunted in Montana and Colorado for many years.

Funeral services for C.H. Smith will be held on Saturday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Mason Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in the Gooch Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mason Funeral Home.
