Arculano "Cano" Martinez, of Mason, passed away on Sunday, June 3, at the age of 91. Mr. Martinez is survived by his children Rosa Morquecho and husband Ernest of Mason, Joe Martinez and wife Irene of Mason, Irene Gutierrez and husband Joe of Mason, Danny Martinez and wife Becky of Mason, Martha Lopez and husband Michael of San Angelo, Raul "Chappo" Martinez of Mason and Amelia Pena and husband Tony of San Angelo, a brother Ramon Martinez and wife Rosa of Abilene, four sisters Julia Nava and husband Manuel of Brownwood, Socorro Charles of Alice, Maria Moreno of Ben Bolt, Delia Sanchez of Alice, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons Martin Martinez and Sammy Martinez, his wife Isabel Martinez, brothers Juan, Pablo and Espedio Martinez and two sisters Bruna Lopez and Francisca Reyna.
"Cano" was born on February 7, 1927 in Gonzales to Antonio Martinez and Maria Gonzales Martinez. He was raised in Mathis. On October 26, 1954 he married Isabel Lopez. After farming in the Texas Panhandle for a number of years, "Cano" and Isabel and their children moved to Mason in December of 1967. In Mason he worked as a carpenter and mason. "Cano" did the rock and brick work on many houses and fences in Mason, including Mason Funeral Home. He was a proud husband and father. Who worked very hard to provide for his family. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved to go dancing. When asked how he was doing his reply was always "Better then ever"! Next time you are in Willow Creek Café look for the heart that "Cano" placed in the rock work on the east side of front room.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 at Mason Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Melvin Dornak on Thursday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Crosby Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Adrian Medrano, Joe Martinez Jr., Marcus Martinez, Michael Allen Lopez, Timothy Pena and Brayden Medrano. Honorary pallbearers are Josie Carasco, Jasmine Rodriguez, Daniella Martinez, Crystal Beamer, Trista Pena, Solita Menchaca, Christopher Martinez, Mark Martinez, Ernest Martinez and Lakyn Medrano.
