Sgt. Major Alfred "Fred" Cardenas

Sgt. Major Alfred (Fred) Cardenas, passed from this life on Friday, March 1, 2013. He was 77 years old. He was born in Satin, Texas (near Waco) on January 2, 1936. He grew up mostly in Austin and spent 25 years in the Army, serving two tours in Vietnam. In 1985, he went to work for the Postal Service and retired in 1996, and he and his wife moved to Mason in 1997. It was the best decision we ever made.

He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Doreen, daughter, Joan and husband Jay of San Antonio, two sons, Fred Jr. and wife Perry of Arizona, Mark of Austin, and two step-daughters, Angela and husband James of Kerrville and Wendy of Austin, grandsons Mitch, Matt, Alfred, and Ian, granddaughters Megan and Nicole. Services will be held at the Mason Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on March 7. This will be followed by full military honors at the funeral home. A reception, after the services, will be held at the River of Life Church.
